Recent Reviews

Washington Post (following recital at Kennedy Center): “. . . Tirrell maintained an impressive control of phrasing and dynamics and the kind of expressive freedom and emotional depth that lie in the heart of Chopin’s style – whimsical, nostalgic, subtly nuanced in dynamics and played with a rhythmical flexibility that gave the music added dimension. His Brahms Sonata in F Minor was rock-solid, with a virtuoso technique, never putting it on display for its own sake. The sharply contrasted movements created their own universe as rich and varied as life itself.”

Heidelberg, Germany (following his debut performance of Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto): “… an artist who found every secret lying in the music. His interpretation was crystal clear, with great presence and shape. The propelling drive that characterized his playing was supported by a superior technique … a Beethoven pianist worth knowing, a pianist with extreme self-confidence and virtuoso stature whose interpretation left absolutely nothing to be desired.”

Dublin, Ireland (following debut with Irish National Symphony): “convincing demonstration of the work’s dramatic power … the American pianist thundered through the Liszt with great style and stunning virtuosity.”

Washington Post (following performance of three concertos with the National Symphony in honor of Leonard Slatkin): “ … superb performance . . . the pianist met the fierce keyboard requirements playing the concertos with champagne lightness and split-second synchronism.” (The highlight was the performance of two Mendelssohn concertos, with fellow pianist Brian Ganz.)

He has performed to acclaim with the St. Petersburg (Russia) Symphony, the Chesapeake Chamber Orchestra, the Heidelberg Collegium Musicum, and the Longwood Symphony in Boston, as well as in numerous solo and dual-piano recitals.
