Central is a congregation that evolved from one of the city's most socially prominent churches more than a century ago into one of its most socially committed.People come to Central from every section of the metropolitan area. They are attracted to the richness of our worship and music, our wide array of Christian education programs, and our opportunities for service in Atlanta and throughout the world.
Members of Central also enjoy the church's intellectually stimulating environment. They appreciate the opportunity to be part of our congregation's continual effort to discern God's will and purpose for Central at this urban crossroads. All who come---members, visitors, people in need of emergency assistance---find at Central a deep-seated spirit of hospitality.
Our congregation includes a full, intergenerational mix of people.Young families find at Central a strong program of Christian education and a supportive community in which to raise their children. Teens contribute to the church's vitality through choir programs, active youth groups, and mission trips to other parts of the world. Adults have many opportunities for service, personal growth and leadership. Central is a community of faith that embraces people of different lifestyles, income levels, races and ethnic backgrounds.
Sunday activities include a varied Church School curriculum and worship with glorious music, powerful preaching, and strong congregational participation. After the worship service, many of us gather for a meal and continued fellowship in the fellowship hall beneath the sanctuary. Periodic Sunday afternoon concerts and organ recitals, annual picnics, and other congregational outings further help to build our spirit of family and community.
Members also meet at the church or in their homes for Bible studies, women's circles, book discussions, support groups, and lunch gatherings around topics of current political or theological interest. The daily work of the church further includes council, committee, and task force meetings, choir and handbell rehearsals, and ecumenical mission endeavors.
The people of Central are encouraged to worship together regularly and to involve themselves in Christian education classes. In addition, they are invited not just to "inhale" the love and word of God, but also to "exhale" it through involvement in one of the church's many programs of service. See the many Outreach Programs we have available.
Central Presbyterian stands directly across the street from the Georgia State Capitol and is surrounded by other state buildings, Atlanta's City Hall, and the Fulton County government complex.
Our mission: Central Presbyterian Church is a community of disciples of Jesus Christ who come together in central Atlanta to worship, serve, and be nurtured by God.
We come as to a wellspring, bringing our thirst and emptiness, only to discover that our cup is filled by the living Word, Who sends us to be with those in need and to call forth God's justice in a chaotic world.
We live out the ongoing story of "The Church That Stayed," joining generations of Central members and others who share this vision to proclaim the Gospel.
