"Living Among Strangers"
Ever feel anxious or inhibited around strangers? There are many episodes in the Judeo-Christian story in which characters encounter strangers, or perhaps are strangers themselves. "Living Among Strangers" will be an exploration of what our story has to say about how to encounter those strange and unknown to us in our everyday lives.
As a launching pad for our discussion, we will read (or use the discussion leader's handy summary of) Parker Palmer's The Company of Strangers, which offers a creative way of thinking about the gospel message and about faithful living. Living Among Strangers by Parker Palmer provides some provocative thinking about the Christian call to "public life," living outside ourselves, and the elements of our culture that inhibit such faithful living. The book examines God's call to live in relationship with one another in a world where we are all strangers.
We'll ask questions like: What kind of public life does Jesus live and call us to live? What does this public life in 21st century America look like? Where do we encounter strangers in our lives, and how can we begin to do so faithfully? We will draw upon personal experiences and think practically about how we can transform our fears and inhibitions of those we do not know into meaningful connections.
